Why Ofsted Registration Matters
Ofsted registration is not optional for childminders in England — it's a legal requirement for anyone providing childcare for children under 8 for more than two hours per day in exchange for payment. Registration involves a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, a health declaration, a home safety inspection, and training in paediatric first aid and safeguarding.
But registration is the baseline, not the destination. Within registered childminders, Ofsted inspection grades range from Inadequate to Outstanding, and the difference matters enormously. An Outstanding childminder doesn't just meet requirements — they actively support children's development in ways that make a measurable difference to early learning.
Understanding Ofsted Inspection Grades
Ofsted inspects registered childminders against four criteria: quality of education and care, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Grades are:
- Outstanding — exceptional provision; children thrive
- Good — strong provision; children well-supported
- Requires Improvement — areas needing development
- Inadequate — serious concerns; enforcement action may follow
You can look up any registered childminder's inspection report on the Ofsted website using their registration number. Reading the full report — not just the headline grade — tells you a great deal about what inspectors actually observed.
Where to Search in North London
North London has a strong community of registered childminders, particularly in Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and the Islington/Hackney areas. Starting points:
- Ofsted's Find a Childminder tool — search by postcode, see registration status and latest grade
- Your local Family Information Service (FIS) — each borough has one, free to use, can advise on Tax-Free Childcare and funding eligibility
- Word of mouth — parents in your area who use or have used a childminder are often the most honest source
Questions to Ask at a Settling-In Visit
Before committing, visit the childminder with your child and ask these questions directly:
- What is your typical daily routine for the children?
- How do you handle separation anxiety in new children?
- What does a typical outdoor/active session look like?
- How do you communicate with parents during the day?
- What happens if you're ill — do you have a backup childminder?
- Can I see your most recent Ofsted report and first aid certificate?
- How many children are you currently registered for, and what ages?
The answers matter less than how they're given. A childminder who talks enthusiastically about the children in their care, who describes their routines in specific detail, and who asks questions back about your child's needs is demonstrating genuine investment.
Red Flags to Watch For
Trust your instincts, and watch for:
- Reluctance to share Ofsted registration number or inspection report
- Vague answers about safeguarding procedures or emergency protocols
- A home environment that feels chaotic or unstimulating
- No settled-in period offered — reputable childminders always do a settling-in phase
- Pressure to commit quickly without time to think
